Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu was the first significant work of vampire fiction, predating Dracula by 26 years. The story centers around 15 year old Laura who sees a mysterious cat-like beast with needles for teeth in her dreams. She soon befriends another young girl, Carmilla. As the story goes on Laura gets weaker and Carmilla’s behavior becomes more erratic until it is revealed that Carmilla is a vampire.
